Die wichtigsten derart regulierten Prozesse sind <a href="Katalyse" title="Katalyse">katalytische</a> (<a href="Enzym" title="Enzym">Enzym</a>)-<a href="Katalysatoraktivit%C3%A4t" title="Katalysatoraktivität">Aktivität</a>, <a href="Translation_(Biologie)" title="Translation (Biologie)">Translation</a>, <a href="Transkription_(Biologie)" title="Transkription (Biologie)">Transkription</a> und <a href="Proteasom" title="Proteasom">Proteasom</a>-Aktivität. Regulatoren der Transkription heißen auch <a href="Transkriptionsfaktor" title="Transkriptionsfaktor">Transkriptionsfaktoren</a>. Im Zusammenhang mit Enzymaktivität ist die Regulation meist negativ. Die für Regulatorproteine <a href="Genetischer_Code" title="Genetischer Code">codierenden</a> <a href="Gen" title="Gen">Gene</a> heißen <a href="Regulatorgen" title="Regulatorgen">Regulatorgene</a>.
